How to Prepare for Soccer Tryouts in Lakeland

Tryout Season Is a Skill Test, Not a Talent Show

Every spring and summer, thousands of young soccer players across Lakeland and Polk County walk onto tryout fields hoping to make a travel team, club roster, or school squad. Most of them prepare the same way: play pickup games and hope their "natural ability" shows through.

That's not a strategy. That's a gamble.

At Southside Footy, we've helped hundreds of players prepare for and succeed at tryouts. Here's what evaluators are actually looking for, how to prepare effectively, and the timeline that gives your child the best shot.

What Evaluators Actually Look For

Having worked with players who've tried out at every level from recreational to MLS Next, here's what consistently separates players who make rosters from those who don't:

  • First touch quality. Can they receive the ball cleanly under pressure? This is the #1 thing evaluators notice. A clean first touch signals a trained player.
  • Decision-making speed. Do they look up before receiving? Do they make the right choice quickly? Or do they hold the ball too long?
  • Composure under pressure. When the tryout gets intense, do they panic or perform? Players who've trained in high-pressure environments have a visible edge.
  • Coachability. Do they listen, adjust, and apply feedback in real time? Coaches want players they can develop.
  • Work rate and attitude. Effort is visible. Players who compete on every ball, communicate, and stay engaged stand out.

Notice what's not on this list: speed, size, or flashy tricks. Those help, but they don't compensate for poor fundamentals. Choosing the right training format is the best way to develop the skills evaluators want to see.

The Preparation Timeline

8+ weeks before tryouts (Foundation Phase):

  • Train 2–3x per week in a structured program (not just pickup games)
  • Focus on first touch, passing accuracy, and ball control under pressure
  • Build fitness gradually through training, not last-minute sprints

4–8 weeks before (Sharpening Phase):

  • Add private 1-on-1 sessions to target specific weaknesses
  • Simulate tryout conditions: drills with time pressure, unfamiliar partners, competitive scenarios
  • Work on mental preparation: visualization, pre-tryout routines, managing nerves

1–2 weeks before (Taper Phase):

  • Reduce intensity slightly. Don't arrive at tryouts exhausted.
  • Focus on confidence-building reps: skills your child does well
  • Review the basics: clean passing, sharp first touch, good body language

Our 6-Week Bootcamp is built around exactly this preparation timeline. Two sessions per week for six weeks, starting 6–8 weeks before tryout season. It's the most efficient tryout prep program in Lakeland.

Game-Day Tips: What to Do (and Not Do) at Tryouts

For players:

  • Warm up before you arrive. Don't use the first 10 minutes figuring out your body.
  • Be vocal. Call for the ball. Communicate with teammates. Coaches notice engagement.
  • Make mistakes confidently. If you try something and it doesn't work, recover fast and try again. Don't hang your head.
  • Show effort on defense. Hustle back. Win 50/50 balls. This separates players more than offensive skill does.

For parents:

  • Drop off and step back. Your energy on the sideline affects their performance.
  • Don't coach from the car afterward. If they want to talk, they'll talk. If they don't, give them space.
  • Regardless of the outcome, the preparation made them better. That's the real win.

Start Preparing Now

The players who show up to tryouts having trained consistently for 6–12 weeks have a visible advantage. Their technique is cleaner. Their decisions are faster. Their confidence is real — because it's built on actual skill improvement, not wishful thinking.

At Southside Footy, tryout preparation isn't a special program. It's what we do every day. Our regular training — futsal-based skill development, contextual pressure drills, mastery-based progression — builds exactly the player that evaluators want to see.
